Medieval/Folk Football
Football evolved during the Middle Ages in Europe. Massive, often unruly "mob" matches were played on holidays in streets and fields, sometimes with hundreds of players! Few rules existed—anything went as long as the ball moved towards a goal.
“Mob football” was even banned at times in England due to its rowdiness!

The Birth of Modern Rules
By the 19th century, football spread to English schools. Each played by its own code—until 1848, when the Cambridge Rules helped standardize play. The Football Association was formed in 1863, creating the foundation of "association football" (soccer).

Clubs, Trophies & The FA Cup (1871)
The oldest club, Sheffield FC, dates to 1857. In 1871, the FA Cup—the world's oldest competition—was launched. Football fever spread rapidly across Britain and beyond.
Today, the FA Cup is still one of the most coveted trophies in football. See more trophies
